Significant changes to the laws regulating paid and unpaid employee leave policies become effective in the next few months. As of July 1, 2015, earned sick leave is a statutorily guaranteed benefit to Massachusetts employees. Pursuant to a referendum passed by voters on November 4, 2014, all businesses with 11 or more employees will have to provide paid sick leave and businesses with 10 or less employees will have to provide unpaid sick leave. As of April 7, 2015, businesses with as few as six employees are required to give new fathers at least eight weeks of unpaid paternity leave. In addition there have been recent changes in the law regarding domestic violence leave.
